A Quick Look at the Market’s Reaction to the Employment Numbers

By , 3 September, 2009, No Comment

The numbers this morning were not particularly compelling, and after a quick sell off, the market seems to have shrugged the employment figures off as “par for the course.” There was nothing unexpected in the numbers and employment continues to an ongoing problem for the US economy.

ES Emini Trading Chart for 9-2-09

A nice day of trading though there were some very choppy periods. No big gainers until the end of the day…most of it was 10 point stuff, especially later as the range narrowed. Had a couple of losers on trades that didn’t really develop.

YM emini Chart for 9-1-09

By , 1 September, 2009, No Comment

I traded the YM contract today, for no particular reason other than I felt like trading something different. Only two trades and the market flattened out. The second trade was a good fade trade though I, as usual, bailed out at 40 points, and left some money on the chart.

ES Emini Chart for 8-31-09

I stayed out of the early action as the market fell out of bed on poor performances in the Asian market and elsewhere, with the exception of Japan. True to form, 9:30 brought some quick action as I was able get a quick long trade and fade it on a short trade. From that point on the market was choppy and uneven, and I burned a trade when I became impatient.

Emini Charts and Trading Psychology

But how do you filter out all of those components of thinking that doom your trading success? Greed, anxiety, anticipation, overtrading, and a host of other psychological factors are the stuff of failure, not chart reading. Really, it’s how you think that will determine your success.

Pivot R1R2 and S1S2: Fed Announcments

The news starts to ratchet up a bit today and it will merit a trader to take notice of the consumer confidence and Case-Shiller announcements. Personally, I put more confidence in the Case-Shiller modeling system than some of the government announcements on the housing situation.

ES Chart for August 21, 2009

ES Chart for August 21, 2009

After a dramatic opening, which resulted in a great trade, the market flattened out and stayed that way until a small move at the close. I missed the early part of the large move and limited out at 12 ticks, so I can’t say I really did a good job on the first trade. I had stopped trading toward the end of the day so I did not participate in the final legitimate trade of the day. I would not say I did a great job.
